Frequently Asked Questions

Domain names

What is a domain name?
All computers on the internet are referenced by IP addresses, which look something like 202.4.237.251. Domain names and the DNS (Domain Name Service) system map easy to remember names to these numeric addresses. You could host a website without a domain name, but few people are likely to remember your IP address!

Why do I have to pay for both a domain name and web hosting?
Domain name registrations are coordinated centrally by various governing organisations which charge fees for this management. Most of the cost of domain name registration goes to these organisations. Web and email hosting, however, is a service provided by individual parties and therefor is usually billed separately.

Can I register my domain name with another party and still order hosting from Sunburnt?
You can do this, just contact us so we can create the hosting account, and set your name servers to ns1.sunburnt.com.au (202.4.237.251) and ns2.sunburnt.com.au (202.4.237.139).

Can I register my domain name with Sunburnt but order hosting from a third party?
Yes you can do this, just contact us and provide the name servers for your domain.

Web hosting

What is web hosting?
Web hosting is a service offered by Internet companies which have dedicated servers available and connected to the internet 24/7/365. Theoretically, any computer connected to the Internet can host web pages, however most people would find it impractical to leave their home computer with a 56K modem online all day and night.

How do I access the files on my website?
You can add, edit and delete files using any FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client. The most common FTP client is Windows Explorer - simply type ftp://ftp.sunburnt.com.au in the location bar and login with your domain name and chosen domain password.

FTP server: ftp.sunburnt.com.au
Username: <your domain name>
Password: <your chosen domain password>

How do I create a subdomain?
Simply create a directory under your root FTP folder with the name of the subdomain you would like. e.g. files in /www, /marketing and /clients would be accessible at www.yourdomain.com.au, marketing.yourdomain.com.au and clients.yourdomain.com.au respectively.

Email hosting

What is the difference between POP and IMAP email accounts?
Most email accounts are POP (Post Office Protocol) accounts. When you check your POP email account, any new mail is downloaded onto your computer and deleted from the mail server. IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) accounts store all their mail permanently on the mail server.

What are my email server settings?

Incoming mail server: pop.sunburnt.com.au
Outgoing mail server: smtp.sunburnt.com.au
Username: <your full email address>
Password: <your email password>

The incoming and outgoing mail servers both use the same username and password.

Some spam arrived in my inbox, what should I do?
Forward any spam that arrives in your inbox to spam@sunburnt.com.au. Doing so automatically trains our spam filter to recognize similar messages as spam. Since spammers are continually changing their tactics to get through our filters it is important to continually report spam and retrain the filter itself.

How do I login to the spam quarantine page?
Visit the quarantine page, and login using your full email address and your email password.

How do I log out of the spam quarantine page?
The spam quarantine page uses HTTP BASIC authentication. To log out, simply close your browser.
